Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, most commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining. This tissue responds to menstrual hormones, causing inflammation, pain, and sometimes scar tissue formation. Endometriosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, and while there is no cure, effective management options are available.

Common Symptoms

People with Endometriosis often experience the following symptoms.

Painful periods (dysmenorrhea) that may worsen over time

Chronic pelvic pain not limited to menstruation

Pain during or after intercourse

Heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding between periods

Risk Factors

Certain factors may increase your likelihood of developing Endometriosis.

Family history of endometriosis

Starting menstruation at an early age or having short menstrual cycles

Never having given birth

When to See a Doctor

See a gynecologist if you have severe menstrual pain that limits daily activities, if pelvic pain occurs outside of your period, or if you have been trying to conceive without success for over a year. Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and preserve fertility. Do not dismiss significant pelvic pain as normal period pain, especially if it is getting progressively worse.
